Building Modeling
Building energy modeling is a tool that can be used in both new construction projects and the evaluation of existing buildings. It provides the owner with a representative model of the buildings energy usage and the ability to compare changes to the system operation based on energy usage and operational costs.

New Building Modeling

Modeling is an invaluable part of the integrated-design of a building. It provides the owner the ability to quantify and evaluate all the different options available for building construction and systems based on energy, cost, and payback. It is also used to rate the proposed building versus a benchmark building to obtain LEED certification or tax deductions through government programs such as the Energy Policy Act (EPACT). By modeling a building prior to construction it will assure that your new building will meet your energy requirements and operational expectations both in cost and occupant comfort.

Existing Building Modeling

By developing a calibrated building model of an existing building the owner will have the ability to justify operational changes and system upgrades. Existing buildings have the advantage of being calibrated by utilizing actual building construction, occupancy schedules and historical energy bills. A properly calibrated building model has the ability to rather accurately predict the cost savings from HVAC or building envelope upgrades and that of operational changes for the building.

Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP)

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers developed a certification in 2009 to establish a group of certified building modeling professionals. These professionals have been tested on their ability to create a building energy model for both new and existing buildings.
